Honda HR-V: CVT Transmission Removal and Installation (CVT)

Removal

NOTE:

  • Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
  • Keep all foreign particles out of the transmission.
  • Special tool Reds engine support hanger AAR-T1256 must be used with the side engine mount installed.

1. Vehicle - Lift Set

  1. Set the vehicle on a lift.

2. Engine Undercover - Remove (With 2WD)

3. Left Front Splash Shield - Remove

4. Engine - Warm Up

  1. Start the engine, and warm it up to normal operating temperature (the radiator fan comes on twice)
  2. Turn the engine off.

5. Transmission Fluid - Drain

  1. Remove the drain plug (A) with the sealing washer (B), and drain the transmission fluid for at least 5 minutes.
    NOTE:
    • Remove metal particles from the magnetic surface of the drain plug.
    • Be careful not to burn yourself by the hot part.
  2. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer.

6. Vehicle - Lift Down

7. Steering Joint - Disconnect

NOTE: Hold the steering wheel with the steering wheel holder tool.

8. Front Wiper Arm - Remove

9. Cowl Cover - Remove

10. Front Grille Cover - Remove

11. Air Cleaner - Remove

12. 12 Volt Battery - Remove

13. Transmission Fluid Warmer - Remove

  1. Remove the transmission fluid warmer (A) with the O-rings (B).

    NOTE: The transmission fluid warmer is aluminum part. Be careful not to damage the transmission fluid warmer.

  2. Put plastic bag over the transmission fluid warmer, then swing it out of the way.
  3. Remove the transmission fluid warmer strainer (C) with the O-ring (D).
  4. Clean the transmission fluid warmer strainer if necessary. Replace the transmission fluid warmer strainer, if it is clogged or damaged.

    NOTE:

    • Do not use compressed air to clean the transmission fluid warmer strainer.
    • Soak the transmission fluid warmer strainer thoroughly in transmission fluid.

14. Engine Wire Harness - Remove (Transmission Upper Side).

  1. Remove the bolts (A)
  2. Disconnect these connectors (B).

15. Shift Cable (Transmission Side) - Remove

  1. Remove the lock pin (A) and the control pin (B)
  2. Remove the shift cable bracket (C) and the shift cable end (D).

    NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.

16. Engine Wire Harness - Remove (Engine Side)

  1. Remove the engine cover.

  1. Remove the harness cover bolts (A).
  2. Remove the harness bracket (B).
  3. Remove the harness holder (C).
  4. Disconnect these connectors (D).

17. Universal Lifting Eyelet - Install

  1. Remove the bolts (A), clamps (B) and move the harness holder (C).
  2. Remove the bracket (D).

  1. Attach the universal lifting eyelet to the cylinder head.

18. Engine Support Hanger - Install

  1. Install the engine support hanger as shown.

    NOTE: Be careful when working around the windshield.

  2. Attach the hook (A) to the slotted hole in the universal lifting eyelet.
  3. Tighten the wing nut (B) by hand, and lift and support the engine/transmission.

19. Upper Transmission Assembly Mounting Bolt - Remove

NOTE: Refer to the Exploded View as needed during this procedure.

20. Transmission Mount - Remove

  1. Remove the ground cable (A).
  2. Remove the transmission mount (B).

21. Vehicle - Lift Up

22. Engine Wire Harness - Remove (Transmission Lower Side).

  1. Disconnect these connectors (A).

    NOTE: To prevent damage, cover the solenoid wire harness connector (B) using a shop towel.

  2. Remove the harness clamp (C).

23. Front Wheel - Remove (Both Sides)

24. Lower Stabilizer Link Ball Joint - Disconnect (Both Sides)

25. Lower Arm Ball Joint - Disconnect (Both Sides)

26. Tie-Rod End Ball Joint - Disconnect (Both Sides)

27. Propeller Shaft (Transfer Side) - Disconnect (With AWD)

28. Torque Converter Cover - Remove

31. Front Subframe - Remove

  1. Support the front subframe with a transmission jack (A).

  1. Remove the front subframe stay on both sides (A).

  1. Remove the front subframe (A) carefully.
  2. Support the transmission with the transmission jack.

32. Torque Rod - Remove (With AWD)

33. Driveshaft Inboard Joint - Disconnect (Both Sides)

NOTE: Secure both driveshafts to the body with nylon straps.

34. Intermediate Shaft - Remove

35. Lower Transmission Assembly Mounting Bolt - Remove

NOTE: Refer to the Exploded View as needed during this procedure.

36. Transmission - Remove

  1. Check once again that the transmission is free of hoses and electrical wiring.
  2. Lower the transmission by loosening the wing nut of the engine support hanger, and tilt the engine just enough for the transmission to clear its end from the side frame.
  3. Slide the transmission away from the engine, then remove the transmission from the vehicle.

    NOTE: Be careful not to drop the torque converter.

37. Dowel Pin - Remove

NOTE: Refer to the Exploded View as needed during this procedure.

  1. Remove the torque converter (A) with the O-ring (B).

39. Drive Plate - Inspect

Installation

NOTE:

  • Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
  • Keep all foreign particles out of the transmission.

1. Torque Converter - Install

  1. Install the torque converter (A) with a new O-ring (B).

    NOTE: Make sure the torque converter is fully engaged on the input shaft, the stator shaft, and the transmission fluid pump drive gear. Failure to do so will result in severe transmission or engine damage.

7. Front Subframe - Install

  1. Support the front subframe with a transmission jack (A).

  1. Raise the front subframe (A) up to the body.
  2. Loosely install the front subframe using the appropriate bolts.
  3. Align the front subframe with the subframe alignment pin, then tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque.
  4. Remove the transmission jack.

  1. Loosen the torque rod mounting bolt (A).

  1. Install the transmission mount (A) to the body with new bolts (B).
  2. Loosely install new transmission mount bracket mounting nuts (C).
  3. Install the ground cable (D).

  1. Tighten the torque rod mounting bolt (A).

  1. Apply molybdenum grease to the inner surface of the hole (A) in the shift cable end (B).
  2. Install the shift cable bracket (C) while installing the shift cable end to the control lever (D).

    NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.

  3. Install the control pin (E).
  4. Insert the lock pin (F) in the direction shown through the control pin hole and out the opening (G) of the control lever so that the hooked end (H) of the lock pin locks into the control pin hole.

  1. Connect these connectors (A).
  2. Install the bolts (B).

  1. Install the transmission fluid warmer strainer (A) with a new O-ring (B).
  2. Install the transmission fluid warmer (C) with new O-rings (D).

    NOTE: The transmission fluid warmer is aluminum part. Be careful not to damage the transmission fluid warmer.

  1. Make sure all four wheels to rotate freely.
  2. Start the engine.

    NOTE: Check that the engine starts in P or N position/mode, and does not start in any other positions / modes.

  3. Check the shift lever operation.
  4. Move the shift lever through all positions / modes, and verify the transmission range switch matches with the A/T gear position indicator.
  5. Make sure the vehicle is turned to the OFF (LOCK) mode with the shift lever is in P position/mode.

    If it does not, adjust the shift cable Shift Cable Adjustment.
