Honda HR-V: DTC C0051-96, C0063-96

NOTE: Before you troubleshoot, review the general troubleshooting information.

Electronic Power Steering (Eps) System - Diagnostics

DTC (EPS)

1. Problem verification.

  1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
  2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

Clear DTCs

  1.  Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then to the ON mode.
  2.  Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC C0051-96 or C0063-96 indicated?

YES

The failure is duplicated. Go to VSA system troubleshooting.

NO

Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the Freeze data/on-board snapshot.

DTC C1400-13, C1400-14, C1400-1D, C1403-14, C1403-29, C1404-11, C1404-13, C1405-11, C1405-13, C1406-11, C1406-13, U3000-49, U3000-55

DTC (EPS)

1. Problem verification.

  1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

  1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then start the engine.
  2. Turn the steering wheel to left and right several times, and keep holding each direction for 10 seconds.
  3. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC C1400-13, C1400-14, C1400-1D, C1403-14, C1403-29, C1404-11, C1404-13, C1405-11, C1405-13, C1406-11, C1406-13, U3000-49, or U3000-55 indicated?

YES

The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.

NO

Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the Freeze data/on-board snapshot.

2. EPS control unit check (update).

  1. Update the EPS control unit if it does not have the latest software.
  2. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then start the engine.
  3. Turn the steering wheel to left and right several times, and keep holding each direction for 10 seconds.
  4. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC C1400-13, C1400-14, C1400-1D, C1403-14, C1403-29, C1404-11, C1404-13, C1405-11, C1405-13, C1406-11, C1406-13, U3000-49, or U3000-55 indicated?

YES

Check for loose terminals and poor connections in the EPS control unit connectors. If the EPS control unit was updated and the symptom/indication is still present, replace the EPS motor/control unit.

NO

Troubleshooting is complete.

DTC C1420-29, C1421-14, C1422-14, C1423-14

NOTE: Before you troubleshoot, review the general troubleshooting information.

DTC (EPS)

1. Problem verification.

  1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
  2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

Clear DTCs

  1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then start the engine.
  2. Turn the steering wheel to left and right several times, and keep holding each direction for 10 seconds.
  3. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC C1420-29, C1421-14, C1422-14, or C1423-14 indicated?

YES

The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.

NO

Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the Freeze data/on-board snapshot.

2. EPS motor/control unit check (substitution).

  1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
  2. Substitute a known-good EPS motor/control unit.
  3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
  4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

Clear DTCs

  1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then start the engine.
  2. Turn the steering wheel to left and right several times, and keep holding each direction for 10 seconds.
  3. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC C1420-29, C1421-14, C1422-14, or C1423-14 indicated?

YES

Replace the steering column.

NO

Replace the original EPS motor/control unit.

DTC C1432-62

NOTE:

  • Before you troubleshoot, review the general troubleshooting information.
  • VSA DTCs may set during this troubleshooting. If so, clear them.

DTC (EPS)

1. Problem verification.

  1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
  2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

Clear DTCs

  1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then start the engine.
  2. Test-drive the vehicle at 12 mph (20 km/h) or more for 60 seconds or more.

NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.

  1. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC C1432-62 indicated?

YES

The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.

NO

Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the Freeze data/on-board snapshot.

2. Vehicle speed signal check.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle, and allow all wheels to rotate freely.
  2. Start the engine.
  3. Turn off the VSA function by using the VSA OFF switch.
  4. Run the vehicle for 60 seconds or more while in the D position/mode.
  5. Check the parameter(s) below with the HDS.

Is 0 km/h (0 mph) indicated?

YES

Go to step 3.

NO

Check online for the latest software or service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting or substitute a known-good PCM, then go to step 1 and recheck. If the PCM was updated and DTCs are not indicated, troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted and DTCs are not indicated, replace the original PCM.

3. Open wire check (F-CAN_H, F-CAN_L lines).

  1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
  2. Short the SCS line with the HDS.

NOTE: Always short the SCS line with the HDS before removing PCM connector(s).

SCS Short

  1. Disconnect the following connectors.

EPS control unit connector B (6P)

PCM connector A (51P)

  1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

Is there continuity?

YES

The F-CAN_H and F-CAN_L wires are OK. Go to step 4.

NO

Repair an open in the F-CAN_H and/or F-CAN_L wires between the EPS control unit and the PCM.

4. EPS control unit check (update).

  1. Reconnect the following connectors.

EPS control unit connector B (6P)

PCM connector A (51P)

  1. Update the EPS control unit if it does not have the latest software.
  2. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then start the engine.
  3. Test-drive the vehicle at 12 mph (20 km/h) or more for 60 seconds or more.

NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.

  1. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC C1432-62 indicated?

YES

Check for loose terminals and poor connections at the EPS control unit connectors. If the EPS control unit was updated and the symptom/indication is still present, replace the EPS motor/control unit.

NO

Troubleshooting is complete.
